Car Accident Treatment Information for Kansas City Physicians

OFFERING NON-INVASIVE MEDICAL TREATMENT OF ACCELERATION-DECELERATION INJURIES RESULTING FROM A MOTOR VEHICLE ACCIDENT

Auto Accident Urgent Care is a multi-disciplinary medical practice in the greater Kansas City area specializing in the conservative treatment of Whiplash, also known as Acceleration-Deceleration (AD) injury to the neck and spine.  Auto Accident Urgent Care stands out in the treatment of AD, providing evaluation, imaging, treatment and rehabilitation all at at three convenient locations in Kansas City, Overland Park and Leawood, allowing the most effective and efficient experience for all parties involved.

At Auto Accident Urgent Care, patient treatment includes a thorough orthopedic and neurological evaluation by a medical provider, complete with digital x-rays from which we determine the appropriate treatment protocol for each individual patient, depending on their accident injuries. Patients are then directed through a treatment plan of medically supervised rehabilitative therapies and chiropractic care with regular medical evaluations as necessary throughout the process.

The literature demonstrates that soft tissue damage can occur with impact speeds as low as 5 miles per hour; however, the majority of patients are unable to accurately identify the velocity changes that occur during their motor vehicle accident, nor are they able to understand how their symptomatology relates to the forces their bodies experienced during a crash. Approximately one-third of chronic pain patients do not think to mention previous automobile accidents when completing a new patient history. Often, they do not recall even having an accident until the results of a proper medical evaluation indicate that, in fact, they had experienced an AD injury from a vehicle accident at some point in their life.

Clinical signs of AD injuries often take 72 hours or more to manifest, and in some cases, pain and other symptoms of joint and ligament damage may not appear for months or even years, often after the window for full recovery has closed.  Auto Accident Urgent Care recommends that patients get evaluated within days of an auto accident to minimize the likelihood of chronic pain and radiculopathies, and to avoid the permanent impairment and disability that result from a lack of timely intervention.  Evaluation at our urgent care facility will ensure that all injuries caused by the car crash are identified, documented and treated, optimizing the patient’s experience and outcomes.

Patients and their physicians should be aware of any of the following physical changes following an auto accident:

AD INJURY SYMPTOMS

  • Neck Pain
  • Jaw pain
  • Lower back pain
  • Upper back pain
  • Tightness or spasm
  • Reduced range of motion
  • Neck tenderness
  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Vertigo
  • Blurring vision
  • Nausea
  • Loss of balance
  • Cognitive issues
  • Depression
  • Insomnia
  • Anxiety
  • Weakness in arms or legs
  • Numbness in shoulders/arms

Providing injury evaluation, imaging, treatment and rehabilitation in our three locations throughout the greater Kansas City area affords your patients a thorough yet efficient experience and eliminates the potential for costly redundant diagnostics, or worse, missed diagnoses due to assumptions that another provider has already assessed for them. Most importantly, the patient is seen and treated in a timely manner at Auto Accident Urgent Care rather than suffering needlessly for weeks or even months while waiting for appointments with specialists.

AUTO ACCIDENT URGENT CARE - The Auto Injury Experts

Patient treatment at Auto Accident Urgent Care includes an in-depth consultation with a medical provider, who then orders any required diagnostics and special testing.  Statistics show that approximately 90% of our patients reach Maximum Medical Improvement (MMI) within the course of 20-30 visits using Auto Accident Urgent Care’s unique non-invasive treatments. Any patients unable to reach MMI with conservative care alone are referred to medical specialists to consider interventional pain management and/or surgical options.

If a patient enters your office as a result of a motor vehicle accident and you suspect an AD injury, your referral to Auto Accident Urgent Care will ensure:

  • Accurate injury identification and complete medical documentation
  • Effective, individualized, medically-managed treatment protocols
  • Cost-efficient rehabilitative procedures that mitigate financial impact
  • Referral to the proper medical specialists when warranted
  • The absolute best care available for victims of auto-related injuries

Auto Accident Urgent Care is THE resource for efficient, effective evaluation and treatment of motor vehicle injuries throughout Kansas City, Overland Park and Leawood.

SPINE INJURY RESEARCH

The peer-reviewed orthopedic journal Spine published a landmark study in February of 2008 that examined existing evidence in order to guide treatment of Whiplash/AD injuries, along with acute neck pain and chronic back pain. The Spine study found that a patient may receive any combination of spinal manipulation/mobilization, therapeutic exercises, massage therapy, education, collars, ultrasound, interferential therapy and more.

Obviously, with this many variables it can be exceptionally difficult to determine which interventions have had the most impact on a patient’s condition, which is why a retrospective meta-analysis such as the one published in Spine is so useful.  It allows us to review a very broad set of data while controlling for different variables, isolating and correlating beneficial details from irrelevant or ineffective data points.

Another important finding of the Spine study was the lack of effectiveness of cervical collars in the treatment of a whiplash injury. Instead of facilitating healing, the extended immobilization of the cervical spine leads to scar tissue formation, adhesions and diminished long-term range of motion. These findings further support the essential role of early intervention with mobilization and/or manipulation.

Possibly the most significant finding of the study is that multidisciplinary case management incorporating multimodal interventions, which is the the type Auto Accident Urgent Care specializes in, results in reduced sick leave as well as better pain and disability outcomes in the short- and long-term.  Further, the article states that when multidisciplinary care is well-coordinated it is positively associated with lower health care costs and quicker claim resolution.  These findings make it easy to see why the combined approach to care that is coordinated under one roof at Auto Accident Urgent Care is the most beneficial route for all of your patients with neuromusculoskeletal injuries from motor vehicle accidents.

SPINE INJURY RESEARCH SUMMARY

  • Well-coordinated, multidisciplinary care resulted in better outcomes and lower overall costs compared to conventional care.
  • Multidisciplinary management of whiplash was associated with quicker resolution of symptomatology when compared with single-provider approaches.
  • Interventions were ranked as “likely helpful”, “possibly helpful”, “likely not helpful”, or “not enough evidence to make a determination.”
  • For most whiplash-associated disorders, the most beneficial interventions included mobilization, exercise, manual therapy, manual traction and education.
  • The use of passive modalities such as ultrasound, electric muscle stimulation and TENS alone or even in combination with other treatments was considered “likely NOT helpful.”
  • Cervical collars were NOT effective in decreasing the frequency or intensity of pain or improving outcomes.
